Squaw Tank

Squaw Tank

AT THE POINT ON GEOLOGY TOUR ROAD beyond which 2WD is discouraged, lies Squaw Tank with its rather commodious turn-around & parking area. The short walk leads down a sandy, rock-enclosed wash to Squaw Tank. A tank is a watering hole found behind a man-made wall that spans the width of a wash. Ranchers built Squaw tank, one of the medium-sized tanks in the area, for cattle-raising in the early 1900s. Unlike many of the other tanks in the park, Squaw sometimes holds water in the wet seasons.

2013 APR 15. Cool, light breeze, about 58F with dusty conditions from sand blowing off the Coachella Valley to the west and 29 Palms area to the north and east. Air: dry as an old bone. Chapstick-wearing wanderers: myself & E!

The wide alluvial plain that starts as Queen Valley several miles north of here, drops rapidly from about 4300ft elevation to 3562ft at Squaw Tank. Don’t forget to pull aside at the turnout just before Squaw Tank—the one for Malapai Hill—to take the 15 minute roundtrip stroll to Balanced Rock. You will be happy you did. The Squaw Tank formations and the surrounding scenery provides the photographer a rich tableau around the small dam and catchment area. I am including a selection from the 130+ 3D pictures I took Apr. 15.
