Hidden Valley Named Formations (this page)

Picnic Area Rocks ♦ “Thumb” Rock
The Land That Time Forgot Area
This canyon runs northwest from the Brown Wall (illustrated in the photo above) and eventually takes one to the Lost Horse Wall. On the left side are the Cow Rocks; across from them Savvy Dome, left of the Brown Wall on a buttress that falls almost straight into the east side of the wash.
EXAMPLES of the numerous rock-climbing formations in Hidden Valley (also known as “Real Hidden Valley”) are included on this page. (Click to Enlarge)
Please feel free to download as many of the 3D Anaglyph or 3D Half Side-by-Side photographs as you like. Share them with other 3D picture collectors. Note: 3D H-SBS images should only be saved if you have access to a 3D TV. Otherwise viewing them properly will be futile.

Gateway Rock
This is the east side of the large formation on your left as you walk into Hidden Valley.
Pitted Rock
This large formation is to the right of the trail into Hidden Valley.
Sports Challenge Rock
An excellent formation for climbers, Sports Challenge Rock lies roughly in the central part of Hidden Valley and is considered one of the best (and most popular) rock formations in this area. Numerous climbs have been made on the west face as well as the (often shaded) east side.
Sunset Rock
This small formation is located in front (just west) of the west side of Sports Challenge Rock.
Tumbling Rainbow
Tumbling Rainbow is seen off to your left when you take the left fork of the Nature Trail. According to Miramontes in his rock climbingguide, getting to it requires some steep scrambling just below the base of the wall. Climbs are generally 60ft to 80ft.
The Sentinel
The Sentinel is certainly one of the largest domes in the area, with man long routes on both sides. They range from 75ft to 150ft high.
The Thin Wall
Beyond The Sentinel and about 500 yards from entering Hidden Valley on the loop trail you will find this smaller formation, with 50ft to 65ft climbs.
Czech Dome

Savvy Dome ♦ Poon Dome ♦ The Cathouse ♦ Lost Horse Wall
This canyon runs northwest from The Brown Wall and eventually takes one to the Lost Horse Wall. On the left side are the cow rocks; across from them Savvy Dome which in the right foreground in this shot. Savvy Dome is immediately left of the Brown Wall on a buttress that falls almost straight into the east side of the wash.
Upper Cow Rock
Upper Cow and Lower Cow Rocks lie at the entrance to The Land That Time Forgot.
The Brown Wall
This formation is approximately 500 yards north of Sports Challenge Rock and just east of the terminus of the Nature Trail. A layer of rich brown desert varnish gives it its name.
The Great Burrito
This light-colored wall lies about 200 yards north of Elephant Dome with numerous easy to moderately difficult climbs.
Elephant Dome
Elephant Dome, a rock with an elephant-shaped flake on the southwest side facing the trail, is located 200 yards north of Sports Challenge Rock. There is one climb recorded: “Pachyderms to Paradise.”
Snake Dome
This is the small formation south of Elephant Dome. You will pass it close by while hiking the Nature Trail.
Hidden Tower ♦ West Face
Hidden Tower ♦ East Face
One of my favorites in this area, this small tower is to the east of Sports Challenge Rock and just east of the Nature Trail. The formation can also be reached easily from Park Boulevard by walking southwest from one of the convenient turnouts. Climbs are on the east side, unseen by hikers doing the Nature Trail.
The Wart
A small formation just east of the trail on your right as you enter Hidden Valley.
The Trojan
Locomotion Rock
This small crag lies in the extreme southeast corner of Hidden Valley.
