JUMBO ROCKS CAMPGROUND, JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, is where you will find this handsome granite spear poking out of the rocks. Look for Campsite 18 (see layout below). Toward the hill beyond, the Spire is visible. A brief, easy stroll up the gullies or along top of the rocks takes you there in a minute.
Mere feet away, an obviously mature juniper bush provides company. This little rocky spire has been the subject of hundreds of professional photographers. Morning, mid-day, in the blush of afternoon’s glow, and illuminated at night, it, like the famous granite wall also found at Jumbo Rocks Campground, is known to people far and wide.
Friend Elliot Koeppel (Cali49.com) and I visited the Campground the last day of February. The campsites were only half-populated—no doubt, it being a Monday, few local residents had hired a spot for the night.
