IMMEDIATELY SOUTH OF THE CAMPGROUND and main rock-climbing formations at Joshua Tree National Park’s Jumbo Rocks can be found an undistinguished looking hill. If you want a grand panorama of the entire Jumbo Rocks complex, this is the spot to see it from. The hill is visible from most areas within the campground. The easiest way to climb it is to simply aim for a spot that interests you and walk as far up as you care to. An alternate approach is to take the same route that one would use to reach Zebra Cliffs (which lies directly behind this unnamed hill). Head for the flat area at the hill’s left end and then follow an easy eastern slope to the top. Zebra Cliffs formation and Crown Prince Lookout lie beyond.
Although most visitors to Joshua Tree are unfamiliar with the place names, in the following image can be seen White Tank Campground. The view is east; the rock piles at the base of the distant rich-brown Bell Mountain foothills comprise White Tank. (This White Tank 3D Gallery link will open a new tab in your browser.)
