THE AREA OF LOST HORSE VALLEY, WEST included in this Gallery features the remarkable Aiguille de Joshua Tree, Beetle Buttress, Uncle Remus, Lloyd’s Rock and, further north, a hidden valley they call Atlantis. Convenient parking can be found at the “Super Creeps” dirt turnout along Lost Horse Road (see map above) or the formations can be reached from the south at Hidden Valley parking lot/picnic area.
Aiguille de Joshua is a remarkable sliver of granite jutting 30 feet into the sky. The feature sits atop a small pile of slivers. It is located 100 yards east of Uncle Remus and a few hundred yards from Jimmy Cliff (per the map above). The 30-foot ultra-thin finger of rock is a must-see, if only for the photo opportunities alone. I visited it three times, under starkly different conditions: First, a sunny, autumn day in 2014, then a clear day, post-snowfall in January 2015, and lastly during a break in the storm six weeks later.

Uncle Remus

Uncle Remus is a large, 35ft tall boulder that sits right on the desert floor about 100 yards north of the Aiguille. From the parking area at the end of Lost Horse Road, head southeast on a marked trail for about 0.6 miles, around the back of Imaginary Voyage and Atlantis (visible at back right in this photo). The pillar will be straight ahead. There are three difficult climbing routes associated with this Goliath-sized pebble, “Uncle Remus,” “Up the Ante,” and “Man from Uncle.”

Lloyd’s Rock
34.01748, -116.17877
Lloyd’s Rock is located about 0.25 mile southeast of the Atlantis area and just northeast of Uncle Remus. It is part of the toe of the hillside and faces west. Rock climbing routes include “Flawless Fissure,” “Friend Eater,” “RR Does it Again,” “Micronesia,” and “Borneo.”
Atlantis
34.01876, -116.17999
A very popular climbing destination in Lost Horse Valley, west side, the Atlantis area contains about 40 climbs! The shortest path to Atlantis is 0.5 miles from the parking area at the end of Lost Horse Road. Park at Super Creeps Wall (see map above). Head southeast on a marked trail. Atlantis lies at the back of Imaginary Voyage in a cul-de-sac. The narrow valley will open to the left (north). Atlantis is sheltered from the wind and gets shade most of the day.
Rock climbers consider these easy to moderate routes. A few of them are “Trident,” “Vorpal Sword,” and “Galumphing.” Right in the front of Atlantis wall is Minotaur Wall, with its climbs “Mystic Knights of the Sea,” “Devine Wind,” “Minotaur,” and “Fantasy of Light. A right-side wall is in the cleft between the outer portion and the rocky hillside to the east. Climbs here include “Solar Technology,” “Men With Cow’s Hands,” and “Wet Pigeon.”

Wish I had been there to capture these in 3D! Here are some additional Google Images (there are many more, use Google Images Search and type in: Aiguille de Joshua Tree). According to the caption on the first two, featured is “International supermodel Laney on the Aiguille.” The middle shot, titled “Bananas are high in potassium” is courtesy of Nick Giblin.
