Perpetual Motion Wall

Virgin Islands 15 View of Queen ValleyVIRGIN ISLANDS MAIN INDEX contains the first of two preview Virgin Islands Galleries. This second Gallery continues the overview where I walked around the perimeter from Geology Tour Road Stop #5 heading up the north side. The weather was ideal for 3D photography. Crystal-clear views went out as far as the eye could see. Residual clouds from some showery conditions the previous day added further punch.

To reach the remarkable Perpetual Motion Wall, this is the most direct approach. There is no developed trail per se but the way is clear—up-slope—while the valley view below expands as you climb an easy rise.

Hiking the circumference of the Virgin Islands group, you will pass the main features that rock climbers from the 1970s and 1980s named. The route back, after leaving a high valley that hosts Perpetual Motion Wall, takes you through thick stands of Joshuas and yuccas, boulder fields and boulder piles galore, and scenery seldom seen exactly like this at Joshua Tree National Park.
